Managing Director, Investment Officer
Client Portfolio Team
It’s truly a team here. Because of Nancy, we really haven’t wavered. Every company in the portfolio has that growth, forward-looking vision. I say that Nancy is kind of a cook, she has figured out how to put these ingredients together to make something that individually, might not hold, but all together it really works.
My experience at ZCI has taught me about the value of long-term. When I got here, I bought certain stocks and watched the volatility in those stocks. Then I saw how closely we followed management and my comfort grew.
I remember when Brooke and I visited a Seattle-based, founder-led company we own. They talked a bit mysteriously about the development of new web services. It didn’t quite click at first where they were going, but of course, now I can see what they were doing, and I have real confidence in that management team.
Founder-led is important for us. I think it’s why Zevenbergen is so good. If you have someone that can hire and keep things focused, I think Nancy uses the term ‘skin in the game’ that’s important.
Our ability to work together is a competitive advantage. Things can happen quickly. We already have a clear understanding of what we’re looking for. This is a subscription model. This management team has done this before in a different industry. No one has to spend time writing a five-page report. The research is done before we meet with the company.
“We’re different, we’re willing to listen to what management is telling us they’re going to bring along next.”
We are probably more open-minded than most. Just look at the portfolio. If a company has revenue growth, we’re going to look at it. We have a history of purchasing companies when they’re really young and unproven.
A lot of firms will say, ‘okay you’re up a hundred percent on this stock, maybe it’s prudent to get out — we met our price target.’ We’re different, we’re willing to listen to what management is telling us they’re going to bring along next.
I grew up in Wenatchee and went to college at Seattle Pacific University. I got a bit of advice from my mother. After exploring four or five different majors, one day my mother said, ‘why not get a business degree?’ And I said, why not?!
I’m a diver. There are some things that have been built underwater at the Bruce Higgins Underwater Trails in Edmonds that I’m very proud of — a 30-acre underwater park by the ferry terminal. All volunteers working weekends.
