Zevenbergen Capital recently attended Equivox, Hedgebrook’s annual fundraiser celebrating women change makers. A literary arts organization located on Whidbey Island, Hedgebrook supports women writers and creators by offering master classes and hosting residency programs, providing artists valuable time, a community and safe space to work, at no cost to the writer.
We were fortunate to hear from Hedgebrook Alumna Janet Mock (pictured), a writer, producer and activist, who spoke on the importance of women’s voices and the need for supportive programs like those offered by Hedgebrook. Ms. Mock made history as the first trans woman of color to write and direct an episode of television, and TIME named her to its list of the 100 Most Influential People in the World.
Each summer Hedgebrook also hosts the Y-We (Young Women Empowered) Write Summer Camp, a week-long camp where teenagers meet mentors and are encouraged to develop their unique talents. We heard from two attendees and both young women shared works they created, one sharing a song and the other a poem.
This marks the 30th year that ZCI has proudly supported Hedgebrook and its mission to amplify women’s voices.
